How Pregnancy Alters the Appearance of the Body
There is no question that motherhood is a profoundly rewarding experience. Childbearing, however, can permanently alter the appearance of a woman’s body, mainly stretching and distorting the breasts and abdomen. A “Mommy Makeover” includes a combination of cosmetic surgical procedures utilized to correct the visible effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
There are many changes to a woman’s body that occur as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding. The breasts and abdomen are the two areas most affected. Changes include weakened and stretched out abdominal muscles and skin and changes in breast size and shape. Changes to the breast include loose, sagging skin and stretch marks, loss of breast volume and decrease in size, and changes in breast shape and nipple position. Some women experience an increase in breast size due to hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding. These changes can be reversed with a variety of breast procedures.

The Benefits of a Mommy Makeover
Breast augmentation using saline- or silicone gel-filled breast implant may sometimes be enough to correct the problem. Often, however, a breast lift (mastopexy) is required (either alone or in combination with an implant) to give the best cosmetic result. A mastopexy repositions sagging breast tissue and elevates the nipple to a more natural location. In other cases, a breast reduction may be necessary to remove excess breast tissue and skin.
During pregnancy, the abdominal (“six pack”) muscles become stretched out due to the growing uterus and separate at the midline. Although diet and exercise may help improve the appearance of the abdomen, they are often not enough to reverse the permanent effects of pregnancy. The only way to bring the muscles back together is with an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or a mini-abdominoplasty. Once stretch marks develop in the skin, there is nothing that will take them away. An abdominoplasty removes the excess skin and stretch marks and brings the muscle edges back together to give a tighter, flatter abdomen. It also enhances the waistline, giving an “hour glass” figure, and removes extra skin and stretch marks in the lower abdomen.
Liposuction is often used to remove areas of fat deposits in the flanks (“muffin tops”), thighs and back to optimize the results of a tummy tuck.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
The length of the recovery period following your mommy makeover will depend on the procedures performed. Swelling and bruising are to be expected. Any pain or discomfort can be managed with medication. Most patients will need to take a couple of weeks off from work in order to properly recover from the procedure.
The Cost of a Mommy Makeover
The cost of a mommy makeover can vary based on the procedures performed and other factors such as breast implant type. Dr. Daiza can answer any questions regarding price and payment options. Financing is also available.
